What is a Tennessee Walking Horse?
Tennessee Walking Horses, also called "Walkers," are a type of gaited horse that originated in Tennessee during the late 19th century. These gentle horses are known for their unique four-beat-running-walk and are one of North America's most popular breeds.
The Tennessee Walking horse is an exceptionally beautiful and extremely gentle horse which loves being around humans. Their running walk, distinguished by the distinctive nod of the head can carry a rider between four and seven miles an hour. The canter is described as rocking horse smooth and comfortable for the rider.
Uses
The Tennessee Walking Horse was developed to provide a smooth, safe ride for farmers traveling many miles over rough terrain and bred to do all types of farm work.
Today they are primarily riding horses which are used for trail rides, ranch and cattle work and recreational riding. But these horses are true allrounders.
The Tennessee Walking horse with its calm disposition, smooth gaits and steady movements is recommended for every late riding beginner or person with back problems. But this gaited breed can be ridden by riders of all experience levels.
Color and Body Type
Tennessee Walking Horses come in nearly every coat color and pattern. Backs, browns, bays, and chestnuts are common as are buckskins, duns, roans, pintos, and palominos.
These type of horse is characterized by its large, kind eyes, strong back and long legs combined with its unique gaits and elegant bearing.
